WAS IT JACK OR JILL? The latest technology,
developed In Australia, has been put to the test in a bid to solve
the greatest murder mystery of them all - who was Jack the Ripper?
Scientist Ian Findlay has tested 118-year-old DNA that the East
End killer might have left behind and built a partial female
profile. Speaking yesterday, Mr. Findlay said the partial profile
had been created from saliva possibly from the Ripper on the back
of stamps on the envelopes of letters sent to London police.
Although many of the letters claiming to have been sent from Jack
(or Jill) are dismissed as hoaxes, some are believed to be genuine
and Prof Findlay, using his method called Cell Track-ID, said he
was able to extract and compile a DNA fingerprint from a single
cell or strand of hair up to 160 years old. However, the overall
conclusion given by the Professor was that, because the samples
were so poorly preserved, only a partial profile was able to be
constructed. “It’s possible the Ripper could be female but the
results are inconclusive,” Prof Findlay said.
