PHOTOGRAPHIC
COMPETITION 2007
SPONSORED BY
‘THE JACK THE RIPPER
NATIONAL CONFERENCE’
The Whitechapel
Society has come a long way since the old Cloak and Dagger Club. We
find ourselves in a position now of not only producing a Journal that
continues to grow and develop, but also a meeting and debating Society
with new vision, attracting new members who enjoy the company of like
minded people.
It has
been the intention for some time now, to forge new partnerships and
promote the Whitechapel Society in as many ways as possible. When we
developed our Society 3 year business plan, publicity was high on the
agenda. This we have started to achieve through the printing and
distribution of professional publicity flyers. We have also, more
recently, elected a new publicity officer onto the committee. Perhaps
more ambitious was the proposal of a Photographic Competition,
something that, if successful could be repeated on regular basis.
Having never organised such an event, the whole experience has been
quite an adventure with some real highs points. The support and advice
we received from all the people and organisations which we contacted
was both refreshing and very encouraging and made us more determined
to see the venture through to the end.

So to
the competition, the theme we selected which best represented the
Society interests was ‘Preserving the memory of London’s old East End’
and we invited people to capture in photographic entries, Buildings,
Churches, Alleyways and anything that looked threatened by the
approaching ball & chain in the Whitechapel & Spitalfields area.
Our 4 main objectives for the Competition were,
-
Whitechapel Society Publicity
-
To instigate the start of a website photographic
archive
-
To forge new partnerships with other organisations
-
To highlight the plight of East End architecture that
is constantly under threat.
We are delighted with the results that this first
Photographic Competition has achieved. We believe the 4 objectives
have been realised and we would like to take the opportunity of
thanking everyone who took part in the contest. This first contest
has been a real learning curve for The Whitechapel Society and the
lessons that we have learnt have been taken on board for the future.
